The Lifepath is a tool, but it's only a tool. If you'd like to do that instead of a background, you are welcome to. However, if you want to write up your backstory and just fill it in from that, that's great too. Or if you want to pick Lifepath options and then write a backstory based on those, that works, as well.

Your backstory and the lifepath are not an either/or thing.

All I ask is that you do at least one of them. No backgroundless Solo whose most important object is his gun, his style is gun, and all his previous relationships are with guns.
